Audio Baby Monitors

Audio baby monitors are just that - they allow you to listen to your baby from any where in the house or garden. The main part of the baby monitor is placed by the baby and you have the parent unit with you. There are a number of differing features to look for on audio baby monitors, however, the number of features the baby monitor has the more expensive it becomes. Look for the following when deciding which baby monitor to choose.

Frequency

The less expensive monitors operate on a 49 MHz frequency, which can lead to more interference from other radio operating devices, such as mobile phones, cordless phones or other monitors. The better 900 MHz monitors are less likely to experience interference from other sources. Some models are now even available in 2.4GHz, which will provide the widest possible frequency and the best clarity.

Power Source

Transmitters and receivers that are battery operated are good for moving around, but you will have to buy a lot of batteries. Look for models that can either use batteries and A/C adapters or models that have rechargeable batteries.

Low Battery Indicator

Transmitters and receivers that have a low battery indicator are helpful in reminding you to replace or recharge the batteries.

Volume Controls

An adjustable volume is handy when you don't want to hear every sound your baby makes.

Multiple Channels

Monitors with multiple channels allow you to find a channel with the least amount of interference. Many things in the house operate from channels, such as wireless networking for internet access and TV distribution equipment (allows you to watch dvd, sky etc on another TV). Choose a monitor with at least 5 channels. The latest models from BT operate on 120 channels and are not too expensive to purchase.

Sound Activated Lights

Receivers that light up when a noise is detected are helpful when you're doing something that prevents you from actually hearing your baby's cries.

Double Receivers

Some models come with two receivers, which can be handy if you want to leave one in a room and have the other for moving around your home.

Size

lightweight compact size receivers are easier to carry around. If you are considering an audio/video type monitor, think about how you will be using it. If the TV will usually be in one room, the small size TV set will work for you. If you will be going from room to room and moving around a lot, then you might consider getting the handheld size TV.

Nightlight

Some baby monitors come complete with night lights attached. These are a useful aid in calming your baby and many allow you to switch them on remotely.

Talkback

This is a great help and can save endless trips running into your baby's room. Two way intercom facility on a baby monitor allows you to talk to your baby through the monitor. Your baby is more easily put at ease if they can hear the reassurance of your voice. You are also able to talk back to someone at the Baby unit.

Paging Facility

This allows you to find the parent unit if away from the charger and also alerts the Parent unit that someone in the nursery is trying to intercom (if the Parent unit volume is set to off).

Belt Clip

An adjustable belt clip on the baby monitor means you can keep the Parent unit wherever you go around the house or garden.
